That is not something you expect to find in a town of 3,000 people, but that is Arcadia. It punches above its weight.
For food, Vino Over the Valley has pizza, pasta, and wine with a view of the coulee that will make you understand why people fall in love with this area. The Arcadia Country Club does a Wednesday wing night and a Friday fish fry that are worth the drive from anywhere in the county. Uncle Sam's and The Lookout are solid local spots. And the Arcadia Pedestrian-Bicycle Trailway is a great way to see the town on foot or bike.
Eau Claire: The Cultural Hub
Eau Claire is the biggest town in this part of the state, and it has the amenities to prove it. Carson Park is a 134-acre peninsula on Half Moon Lake with a historic baseball stadium where Hank Aaron played in 1952, the Chippewa Valley Museum, and the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp Museum. The Chippewa River State Trail runs 30 miles through some of the best scenery in the region and is perfect for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing in the winter.
The food scene in Eau Claire is better than a town this size has any right to have. The Lakely, Mona Lisa's, and The Informalist are downtown standouts. Valley Burger Company has the best burgers in the area. Shift Cyclery and Coffee Bar is a great spot for coffee and bike culture. The Nucleus is the breakfast spot everyone talks about. And if you are looking for something to do with the family, the Children's Museum of Eau Claire is worth a stop.
Eau Claire also has the Phoenix Park bridge downtown, which is one of those spots that just makes you want to slow down and enjoy the evening. It connects the downtown to the riverfront and is a favorite spot for walking, biking, and local events.
Chippewa Falls: Small-Town Charm with Big Amenities
Chippewa Falls is just a short drive from Eau Claire, and it has its own personality. The Chippewa Falls Museum of Industry and Technology is worth a visit if you want to understand the industrial history of this region. Autumn Harvest Winery and Orchard is a fall destination for apples, cider, and wine. And the Old Abe State Trail runs through town and connects to a broader network of trails that make this area a destination for cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts.
Chippewa Falls has that mix of small-town feel and access to bigger-city amenities that so many buyers are looking for. You can live on acreage outside of town and be at a good restaurant or a grocery store in 15 minutes. That is a hard combination to beat in the Midwest.
Menomonie: College Town Character
Menomonie is home to UW-Stout, which gives the town a younger energy than some of the smaller towns in the region. The antique stores and thrift shops are some of the best in western Wisconsin. The local breweries are worth a stop. And the Red Cedar State Trail runs through town, offering miles of scenic hiking and biking along the river.
What I like about Menomonie as a place to live is that it has the services and amenities of a bigger town without feeling like a city. You get the college-town energy, the trail access, and a downtown that actually has things going on. For buyers who want rural property with access to a town that has some life to it, Menomonie is worth a look.
Mondovi: Quiet and Scenic
Mondovi is a quiet town connected to Eau Claire by some of the most scenic winding roads in the Driftless Area. The Buffalo River State Trail runs through Mondovi to Fairchild, following the Buffalo River through woodlands, hills, and wetlands. It is a beautiful ride or hike, and it is one of those trails that makes you appreciate the landscape that defines this part of Wisconsin.
Mondovi is not a destination town. It is a place where people live, raise families, and enjoy a quieter pace of life. For buyers who want to be within driving distance of Eau Claire but do not want to live in the suburbs, the area around Mondovi offers some of the best rural property values in the region.
Osseo: Seasonal Charm
Osseo has a seasonal farmers market with fresh produce, baked goods, and local makers that draws people from all over the area. The downtown has local shops and cafes that give the town a friendly, walkable feel.
